Through New Play Development programs, the Festival creates an artistic home for today’s most exciting playwrights, launching new plays through its Pipeline Series of New Plays, Women’s Artist Writing Group, and Commissioning and Fellowship Program.

Each summer, Dorset Theatre Festival’s Apprentice program offers up to 20 pre-professional theatre artists the opportunity to work side-by-side with today’s top theatre directors, designers, and actors as integral members of the team.

During the autumn, Dorset Theatre Festival’s Young Playwrights program introduces playwriting to more than 300 regional middle and high school students. Each spring, these workshops culminate in the Jean E. Miller Young Playwrights Competition, honoring the creativity and talent of student writers.
