MRS. CHRISTIE by Heidi Armbruster (Opening Night)

  • Dorset Playhouse 104 Cheney Road Dorset, VT 05251 (map)

World Premiere

Heidi’s exciting new play examines what might have happened to famed mystery writer Agatha Christie during her eleven-day disappearance in 1926. Agatha herself is a character in the play, as are the modern-day Christie Enthusiasts who have gathered at the writer’s homestead for a ComiCon-esque experiential weekend. Just as the protagonist, Lucy, realizes she has been left alone on a weekend getaway for mystery geeks, she meets a Christie scholar who claims to hold the secret to Agatha’s disappearance: an unpublished play. Fascinated by a real-life mystery surrounding a mystery writer, Lucy sets out to unearth the lost manuscript. Scene 2 takes place in the same dining room, but in 1926 – the night that Agatha disappeared.

Through cleverly designed double-casting, Mrs. Christie moves back and forth through time, following Lucy in her pursuit of the 93-year-old play all while Agatha, Mrs. Marple, and Hercule Poirot betray what “really happened.” Heidi’s play relies on the tropes and style of the mystery genre, but the takeaway is strongly feminist: What is lost when women’s voices disappear? But the play also acknowledges the deep truth that sometimes a Woman needs to disappear in order find herself.
