Hello again! Today things really got started over at the Playhouse. We had our first meet and greet of the season, where staff and apprentices from all departments, along with the cast and creative team for the first play, get together to enjoy a lovely breakfast spread provided by our awesome company management team and learn a little more about the production we’re all about to make together. We have one of these for each play. Aside from being a great opportunity to learn everyone’s name, they’re fascinating. The director and designers share their thoughts on the play and the cast gets to see the set model for the first time.
In the years that I’ve been here, meet-and-greets have been the site of a range of surprising moments of learning and passion. Last year we got an extremely thorough and animated oral history of Dame Agatha Christie. In other seasons we’ve received lectures on period fashion from Antebellum Virginia to post war London to European Flight Attendants in the 1960’s. Today, we all looked at pictures of Victorian underwear. It’s a moment for collective excitement in advance of the great big push that each show requires from all of our artists and staff.
Now things start to get exciting, because the staff, apprentices and first cast are all here and we’re ready to get down to work. We follow the meet-and-greet with the first rehearsal of our upcoming production of Intimate Apparel. Word from the first read-through is that the production is going to be “incredibly beautiful” which, between the amazing script by Lynn Nottage, and the unbelievably talented cast that we’ve brought in, does not surprise me at all.
Finally this week, we also had our first big company cookout at the lovely home of our board member Rick Jackson! Company members, board members and friends all gathered to enjoy good food and great weather, and share their growing excitement for the season (while trying to learn each other’s names).
It’s the first week of our summer season and we’re off to a great start!
Because one of my favorite parts of the summer is all the amazing food we get to eat and share, I’m going to keep including all the great recipes I collect from company members. We’ve got some real chefs up here! Enjoy this, from board member and all-around great lady, Susan Boynton. Beware: This dip is one of the most addictive substances known to man!
